WOW (Women Of Wrestling)
Taped in May 15-16, 2018 in Los Angeles, California at Belasco Theater
Aired November 2, 2019 on on AXS-TV
A video package recapped last week’s show. The narrator wondered if Tessa Blanchard would face Jungle Grrrl or continue to avoid facing her top contender… Lana Star was shown looking nervous in a parking lot. The Beast showed up behind her and told her that if she ever messes with one of her matches again she will rip her face off. The Beast told her to think twice before getting cozy with Blanchard… The broadcast team was David McLane and Stephen Dickey, and Shaul Guerrero was the ring announcer…
David McLane did the usual introduction in the ring and then introduced Jungle Grrrl. McLane recapped how Jungle Grrrl won last week’s match over The Beast by DQ. Jungle Grrrl said a win is a win and she’s ready to face Blanchard in a one-on-one match. WOW Champion Tessa Blanchard came to the ring. McLane said he believes Blanchard had something to do with Jungle Grrrl winning by the disqualification that was caused by The Lioness and Lana Star last week. Blanchard said she’d love to kick Jungle Grrrl’s ass again, but she already signed a contract to defend the WOW Championship against a newcomer who would get the chance of a lifetime. Cue the obnoxious canned heat as Blanchard made her exit… [C]
Powell’s POV: Are we supposed to feel sympathy for heel Jungle Grrrl not getting her title match with heel Tessa Blanchard?
1. Khloe Hurtz (w/The Ring Rats) vs. Sassy Massy. Hurtz’s “rats” (a group of men) tripped Massy as she was running the ropes at one point. Late in the match, Massy slipped out of a Torture Rack attempt and drove Hurtz’s face into the mat with a Complete Shot for a two count. Massy followed up with the same move and scored the pin…
Sassy Massy beat Khloe Hurtz.
Powell’s POV: Hurtz is Katie Forbes, and Massy is Alisha Edwards from Impact Wrestling. I’m not sure why they had Massy hit her finisher twice.
Security camera footage showed The Dixie Darlings entering the locker room of Jessie Jones and Amber O’Neal and stealing her their boots…
Chantilly Chilla and Sassy Massy crossed paths backstage. Chilla told Massy that her match was lit, then Massy told her to kick some ass in her match… [C]
2. The Temptress (w/Dagger) vs. Chantilly Chella. McLane spent the match saying that if Blanchard retained her title in the main event, she would not be able to avoid defending the title against Jungle Grrrl. Chella performed a Thesz Press for a two count. She followed up with a missile dropkick for another near fall. Dagger pulled Temptress to ringside. Chella went for a dropkick through the ropes, but the heels moved and then Temptress delivered a big boot to Chella. Back inside the ring, Chella caught Temptress with a spinning kick and scored the pin…
Chantilly Chella beat The Temptress.
Powell’s POV: Chella is Ray Lyn, and Temptress is Katerina Waters (a/k/a Katie Lea Burchill/Winter). The match was solid despite feeling rather trivial.
Jessie Jones and Amber O’Neal were shown searching for her boots in the locker room. They determined that they’d have to work without their boots… [C]
3. Jessie Jones and Amber O’Neal vs. Adrenaline and Fire in a WOW Tag Title Series match. Before the match, Jones took the mic and told McLane that he should postpone the match due to their missing boots. McLane said they could wrestle in their bare feet. Jones wrestled in her Donald Trump socks (yes, really) while O’Neal worked in sneakers. After being isolated, Adrenaline performed a tornado DDT on Adrenaline and made a hot tag. Jones was shot up and over the top rope by Fire. Jones landed harmlessly on the apron, but she got up selling an ankle injury. Fire took one of O’Neal’s shoes off and threw it at Jones. Fire applied an ankle lock and got the submission win for her team.
Adrenaline and Fire beat Jessie Jones and Amber O’Neal in a WOW Tag Title Series match.
Guerrero interviewed Adrenaline and Fire and said they’ve reached the finals of the tag team series. They spoke about winning the tag titles without saying which team they will face…
Powell’s POV: The ol’ lack of proper footwear out for losing. Okay, I don’t think I’ve ever seen that one before (or I’ve forgotten if I have). Anyway, the match was entertaining and it actually did give Jones and O’Neal an out. Sure, some wrestlers work barefoot, but it would obviously be different if you’re not used to doing so.
Backstage, Jones and O’Neal were grumbling when The Dixie Darlings showed up and mocked them with boots. They gave the boots back and then Jones and O’Neal attacked them and made quick work of them… [C]
A video package spotlighted The Lioness and recapped last week’s main event finish and the new working agreement between Blanchard, Lana Star, and Sophia Lopez…
4. Tessa Blanchard vs. The Lioness (w/Lana Star) for the WOW Championship. Dickey noted that the match could run beyond their television time. McLane said if that happens then they will show the remainder of the match next week. Blanchard was sent to ringside. Lioness set for a dive between the ropes, but Blanchard hit her from the floor. Later, Lioness dropkicked a seated Blanchard in the corner and covered her for a two count. Lioness knocked Blanchard to ringside with an enzuguiri and then hit her with a suicide dive. Back inside the ring, Lioness hoisted Blanchard onto her shoulders. Blanchard elbowed her way free and then hit a hammerlock DDT and scored the clean pin.
Tessa Blanchard beat The Lioness to retain the WOW Championship.
After the match, Jungle Grrrl entered the ring and speared Blanchard and then choked her until three referees got involved. The referees pulled Blanchard and Jungle Grrrl apart to wrap up the show…
Powell’s POV: A good match that was far more pleasing than the typical quick WOW main events that often end with cheap finishes. It is odd that Blanchard is essentially working against other heels. Or at least I assume Lioness is a heel now given that she’s aligned with Star and dropped “Faith” as her first name. Plus, it appears she’ll be working against Jungle Grrrl, who recently turned heel. Nevertheless, Blanchard did a great job of making it seem like she was on the verge of losing before she came back with her finisher and scored the pin. Overall, this was one of the better episode of the season.
