It went away eventually. You still hear it, but it's much rarer now.
I attribute its spread to Kardashian-mania--they were the champions of it.

Check out any public radio show or podcast. Years ago it was rare and considered too annoying to be let on the air. Now it's everywhere PhDs with meme-like speech defects are welcome.

Vocal fry is still less disturbing than upspeak. The worst is when people insist on even WRITING in upspeak.
I saw the movie last night. I think it was really well acted? But the storyline was confusing? And maybe hard to follow?

The thing that drives me crazy is how many people began every sentence with "So..." "So" is the new "like."
Elizabeth Warren does it every time she speaks. Example is at :11 in the link below.
Tons of Youtube creators and Instagram "influencers" start their videos with "So...."

R6 Carla from Bon Appetit on Youtube does the valley girl voice all the time, and it drives me nuts.

Carla is annoying but I think her Valley Girl affectation is more upscale than what I hear a million times a day on the sidewalks of NYC. It's usually women talking loud and non-stop into their cellphones as they walk.

Many young men do up speak now. It's startling to hear it in English spoken as a second language. French and German doesn't feature upspeak but young men speak English with up speak.
I hear up speak a LOT, too much, on liberal / pundit podcasts.
