My friends and I were playing with a Ouija board last night for kicks and my friend asked if any spirits were with us. All of a sudden the pointer started darting around the board and spelled out LOIS NETTLETON! WTF! How fucking random. We quickly Googled her and discovered that was an old-time actress famous for playing Blanche’s lesbian sister on Golden Girls. That’s the only thing we recognized her from. We thanked her for visiting us, but told her to go back into the light and become a guardian angel to us.
Why would her spirit come through for us and then leave suddenly? Our friend Kim said that it might have been a demon impersonating Lois, which apparently they are known to do. She’s going to sage the house next week in case any malevolent spirits are still present.
The broom fell over in the utility closet later that night, but I’m not sure Lois had anything to do with it.

She probably guested on every one hour drama on tv during the 60s and 70s. A good actress who tended to get stuck with good girl parts when you knew she could do more. Janice Rule guested on the same shows (Mrs. Ben Gazarra in those days), but she usually had more interesting brooding or slightly unconventional parts.

Ouija Boards can be dangerous if he owner doesn't know how to protect themselves and how to use it. No, he didn't get rid of them. but he also bought a suit of armor from the plague and put it in his bedroom. His sister told me he woke up one night and it was standing at the foot of his bed. Scared the crap out of him but he didn't remove it. The next night he woke up and it was in his face. She didn't tell me what he did with it after that. He doesn't know how to protect himself so not sure how he is going to end up. I never buy anything from him because God only knows what else is attached to things he has. According to Wikipedia...
[quote]Nettleton made her last public appearance at the Twilight Zone Convention in Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey in August 2007. Five months later, in January 2008, she died in Woodland Hills, California at the age of 80 from a brain tumor. She was interred in New York City's Saint Raymond's Cemetery.
So does this mean Lois's spirit has been in a restless bardo state ever since her death in 2008, and finally, out of sheer desperation, she resorted to communicating through OP's Ouija board? Should OP (and Datalounge) be helping poor Lois get to "the other side?"

No shit, but back in the 1980's, I used to meet with a friend on the Upper West Side for long sessions on his Ouija board. Queen Elizabeth I took an interest in what we were doing and came through regularly.
As I recall, she didn't think much of Bette Davis's portrayal of her. She thought Glenda Jackson was the best of the lot.

You are SO RIGHT, r165 - the ghostly manifestation of a bygone C-list actress via a children’s toy is absolutely not something that Dataloungers should find campy or funny.
by Anonymous | reply 166 | June 23, 2021 4:11 AM |
R166, It's obviously more than a children's toy. It's not the end when we die. Our souls go onto another dimension. That's why I don't think it's as funny as the rest of you. Lois came through for whatever reason and I think we should seriously question why?

Lois Nettleton starred, along with Datalounge fave, Ida Lupino, in the fabulous super-70s TV movie, Women In Chains. It was “The 3:30 Movie” from time to time, and I and my two brothers (they turned out straight, somehow) delighted in watching it at every airing. Get a load of the trailer, OP.

Since she played one of the first lesbians on TV, she is not just a C-list actress: she is an ICON! Both she and the actress who played Suzanne's lesbian debutante friend in an episode of Designing Women said they received very kind letters for YEARS from lesbians thanking them for representing us on TV.
by Anonymous | reply 171 | June 23, 2021 6:03 AM |
Lois Nettleton was also active in theater and a life member of the Actors Studio. She was hardly a C-list actress.

Better Lois Nettleton than batshit crazy Diane Ladd, although I'll bet she guested on shows with Ladd's even wackier ex-husband Bruce Dern. They were part of the same circuit ("The Fugitive" and other Quinn Martin series and all the Universal produced knock-offs).
Nettleton was probably more B than C-list. For one thing, she could actually act and although she mostly did tv, it was respectable series (I don't think she had to resort to high concept shows like Manimal, although she did do "Musters Today") and decent roles. Now, Martha Hyer, that was C-list---you knew she was a bargain basement version of someone else although you couldn't decide which "cool blonde" for which she was a cheapo version. She would have done Manimal or some other high concept trash if she'd still been working..

I loved Lois Nettleton. She was in a great sci fi picture called The Bamboo Saucer. She was in a Norman Lear soap anout a world where the women were dominate. I think it was called amA New Leaf.” I saw her in a summer theater production of the Kandet-Ebb musical:The Happy Time. She co stared with George Chakiris. She was wonderful. Beautiful voice.

Fun fact: Martha Hyer was an Academy Award nominee for supporting actress for "Some Came Running." Personally, I think it was compensation for her having been overlooked for her earlier performance in "Abbott and Costello Go to Mars."
by Anonymous | reply 181 | June 23, 2021 4:06 PM |
Martha Hyer was married to the very successful producer Hal Wallis. She didn't have to work if she didn't want to.
Lois Nettleton was really good in the film version of the Tennessee Williams comedy, Period Of Adjustment. Even if Jane Fonda was the eye candy. (Also w/ Jim Hutton, Tony Franciosa, and John McGiver.)

Hyer is described by one IMDB quote as "Universal's answer to Grace Kelly" which is to say a very poor man's "cool blonde". Universal was running on fumes in those days Abbott and Costello Go to Mars was the stuff that kept the doors open. She started at RKO which was entering its death spiral at that time. Wallis was basically at the end of his career by the time she married him, although did make a few blockbusters like Rooster Cogburn.
