GARDEN CITY, Idaho (KBOI) — At KBOI2 Adventure Starts with Weather and due to weather, some adventures must start indoors. We head indoors to Asana Climbing Gym where boulderers can get ready for the outdoor season.
We're heading into one of the best seasons for this outdoor sport, rock climbing.
"The best times of year to go outside are just before summer, and just after summer, there's a point when it gets too hot here," said Rory O’Leary, Owner/Operator of Asana Climbing Gym.
Like many sports, you'll need a little practice before your ready take on your first adventure.
Places like Asana Climbing Gym near Boise are a great place to start.
"We're able to facilitate all levels of skill, so we have very easy climbs to very difficult climbs for advanced climbers...It's also an environment with lots of padding and supervision, again so that we can make sure people stay safe," said O’Leary.
Climbers can choose to rope climb or boulder, bouldering is one of the easiest ways to get into the sport.
"Bouldering is the cheapest way to get into climbing, the only thing you need to boulder is a pair of climbing shoes and chalk," said O’Leary.
At the gym, climbing routes are marked by different colors.
"It's called a monochromatic system so every color is specific to a grade level," said O’Leary.
And like most sports, climbing challenges personal growth in many ways.
"I know a lot of people who find weight and cardio, perhaps, monotonous or boring, and this is an activity that challenges your brain and body at the same time," said O’Leary.
Learning which route to take, 'hold' to grab, and technique to use. Will determine if you make it to the top.
Asana works with youth programs like the Boise Parks and Recreation After School Program to get them excited about adventures like this.
